Clubfoot

by | Jan 15, 2025

Clubfoot, also known as talipes equinovarus, is a congenital condition where a baby’s foot is twisted out of shape or position. This happens when the tendons connecting the muscles to the bones in the foot are shorter than usual, causing the foot to point downward and inward. Left untreated, this condition can make walking challenging as your child grows. Clubfoot can affect one or both feet and is relatively common, occurring in about 1 in every 1,000 newborns.
The exact cause of clubfoot isn’t always clear, but it’s believed to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is more common in boys and often runs in families. While clubfoot does not typically cause pain in infancy, early intervention is crucial to prevent complications like difficulty walking or long-term foot deformities.

With the right care, your child can overcome these challenges. Treatment typically begins shortly after birth and involves proven techniques such as the Ponseti method, a process of gentle stretching and casting.

Bracing may follow to maintain the correction, and in some cases, surgery may be recommended. These approaches are highly effective, and with expert treatment, most children with clubfoot go on to live normal, active lives.
